Cindy Sherman
Throughout Sherman’s successful career she assumes the role of model, photographer, and director as she turns the camera onto herself to create arresting portraits in which she explores a variety of female social roles or personas. Her work forces us to challenge the oppressive influence of mass media over our identities. Her breakthrough series was "Untitled Film Stills," inspired by film noir, consisting of 69 black-and-white photographs of herself evoking typical female roles. She also pulls her personas from other sources, including fairytales, art history and the fashion world. Cindy Sherman is amongst the most significant artists of the Pictures Generation——who came of age in the 1970s and responded to the mass media landscape with both comedy and criticism.
We will explore the career of Cindy Sherman one of the most successful female artists that turned dressing up into artwork
